The Boiler Technician performs preventive and corrective maintenance on boiler systems that produce steam or high-temperature water for use in a facility. Responsible for firing up boilers, observe, and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts which register various aspects of boiler operation. Adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient boiler operation and to meet demands for steam or high- temperature water. The incumbent may also perform one or more of the following tasks: maintain a log in which various aspects of boiler operation are recorded; clean, oil, make minor repairs or assist in repair to boiler room equipment; and following prescribed methods, treat boiler water with chemicals and analyze boiler water for such things as acidity, causticity, and alkalinity. Uses a Computer Maintenance Management System (Maximo) to correctly capture data related to maintenance work orders, preventative maintenance inspections, and emergency/urgent customer requests. Uses a Tablet to track work orders, request material, add labor and material used against a work order. Boiler mechanics shall have a Trade school diploma & hold a current and valid North American Technician Excellence (NATE) HVAC certification pertaining to their line of work, to perform maintenance work and repairs on HVAC Equipment, including boilers. The Boiler Technician may be required to preventive and corrective maintenance on various sizes and types of air compressors.


Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of domestic-type boilers.
  • Checks condition of installations, the correct position of valves and traps, water supply, and grate cleanliness.
  • Operates various sizes and types of boilers.
  • Periodically checks, depending on the type of boilers, thermometer, and water show glasses or pressure gauges and boiler-water gauges and adjusts air drafts or boilers, accordingly, adjusts water supply, stokes, or banks fire.
  • Removes cinders and ashes and replenishes fuel.
  • Inspects heating lines and radiators for defects, releases air from radiators and pipes.
  • Notifies supervisor of boiler failures or more serious defects.
  • Performs miscellaneous laborer and cleaning duties as required.
  • Clean boilers on the furnace and water side.
  • Inspects, repairs, or replaces shut-off valves, gates, and circulation pumps.
  • Opens water heater, inspects, and cleans inside, inspects anodes, and replaces when required.
  • Repairs or replaces drain cocks, test cocks and water taps.
  • Cleans, repairs, or replaces water level gauges and feed-water regulators.
  • Cleans, repairs, or replaces pressure gauges, hydrometers, air flaps and exhaust gas test equipment when required.
  • Cleans sump pumps, drains for wastewater, gutters and oil traps, repairs or replaces when required, paints as required.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on various sizes and types of air compressors.
  • Performs other duties or assignments as required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education/Certifications:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Must be qualified per UFC 3-430-07.
    • Must possess Valid Driver's License.
  • Experience
    • Three (3) years' experience in the operation and maintenance of domestic type boilers.
    • Knowledge of safe operation of basic hand and power tools.
    • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures.
  • Skills
    • Effective verbal and listening communications skills.
    • Client service and public interaction skills.
    • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
    • Must successfully complete all training programs
    • Must be able to type 20 words per minute
    • General knowledge of air compressor maintenance
    • Must possess the following PC skills: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Work Environment
    • May be assigned shift work.
    • Works in the F&S boiler plants and work sites.
    • Applicants should be aware that some positions/locations could involve working in a potentially dangerous environment.
    • The worker is frequently in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and line pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
    • The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Physical Activities:
    • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
    • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
